Instantly or Smartlead: which should a startup pick?

The short answer: Instantly and Smartlead are both cold email sending platforms. They send your emails from many mailboxes and include tools that protect your sender reputation. They differ in price, in how they handle mailboxes, and in what they add beside sending. Here is which one to pick.

Updated October 2026

  • If you want the lowest entry price: pick Smartlead. Base is $39 a month on monthly billing. You can also buy mailboxes and domains inside the app.
  • If you want an AI Reply Agent that answers interested replies and books the meeting: pick Instantly. Starter is $76.50 a month on yearly billing, and some accounts still see Growth at $47. The AI Reply Agent answers interested replies, and Instantly sells a lead finder in credits.
  • If you will send at very high volume: Smartlead Prime is $379 a month for 500,000 sends. Ask Instantly which of its plans fits your volume, because its plans are changing.
  • If you do not have a list of people to email yet: you need a data tool first. See the data tools in our guide to the best AI SDR tools for startups.

Prices are in US dollars as of 19 October 2026. Confirm the price with the company before you buy.

Who is this comparison for?

This page is for founders and first sales hires who have a list of people to email and need a tool to send the messages. Instantly and Smartlead are two of the cold email tools in our roundup of AI SDR tools for startups, which covers 16 tools.

A cold email tool delivers your emails and protects your sender reputation. You usually bring the list.

If you sell a cold email or sales tool: when a founder asks ChatGPT which sending tool to buy, does it name you? Check it free with the AI visibility checker or submit your tool to be considered for our AI SDR guides.

Eight terms, in plain words:

  • Cold email: a first email to someone who has not asked to hear from you.
  • Mailbox: one email address you send from, such as sam@yourcompany.com.
  • Domain: the part of your address after the @.
  • Sender reputation: the trust that email providers, such as Gmail, place in your sending domain.
  • Deliverability: whether your email reaches the inbox instead of the spam folder.
  • Warm-up: slowly raising your sending volume so email providers learn to trust a new mailbox.
  • Unified inbox: one place to read the replies from all your mailboxes.
  • Credits: the units a tool uses up when it works.

How do warm-up, mailboxes and sender reputation work?

Sender reputation is the trust that email providers place in your sending domain. If that trust is low, more of your email lands in the spam folder. Cold email tools protect it, but none can promise that an email reaches the inbox.

Warm-up builds trust in a new mailbox. A new mailbox has no sending history, so you start with a small amount of email and raise it over time. Instantly includes unlimited warm-up. Smartlead has a warm-up pool.

Mailboxes spread your sending. Mailbox rotation means sending from several mailboxes in turn. Both tools rotate sending across the mailboxes you connect. Smartlead also sells Google mailboxes inside the app.

Google sets rules for senders. Keep these in mind whichever tool you pick:

  • Google asks senders to keep their spam rate below 0.10% and to avoid ever reaching 0.30% or higher. You can see your spam rate in Google Postmaster Tools.
  • Google's rules cover mail sent to personal Gmail accounts. Every sender needs SPF or DKIM. If you send 5,000 or more messages a day, you need SPF, DKIM and DMARC, and your marketing messages need one-click unsubscribe.
  • SPF, DKIM and DMARC are the email checks that prove your domain is yours.

Start with low volume and watch your spam rate.

What deliverability tools does each one have?

Instantly. Every sending plan includes unlimited warm-up and unlimited email accounts. The plans include reputation protection, bounce detection (a bounce is an email that comes back undelivered), a global block list (a list of addresses you never email, applied to every campaign) and A/Z testing (trying two versions of a message). Higher plans add the SISR system. Enterprise adds a private deliverability network.

Smartlead. It has a warm-up pool and mailbox rotation. SmartSenders is an add-on where you buy mailboxes and domains. SmartDelivery is a deliverability add-on. SmartServers are private sending servers, and the Prime plan includes 3 of them.

Instantly builds warm-up, reputation protection and bounce detection into every sending plan. Smartlead sells mailboxes and a deliverability add-on separately.

Who does each tool fit?

The two tools do similar jobs, so read the Fits line on each card. Longer bars mean a stronger fit on that point. The bars are Research, Deliverability, Automation, Setup and control, and Price clarity.
