Inflection AI’s Pi AI Assistant Gets an Upgrade

Updated on March 8 2024

A startup called Inflection AI is shaking up the game with a fresh approach that challenges the traditional notions of how we interact with machines. Founded in early 2022 by Mustafa Suleyman, Karén Simonyan, and Reid Hoffman, this company is on a mission to create nothing less than a “personal AI for everyone.”

With the core idea of having personal AI, Inflection AI launched Pi AI chat assistant. Pi personal AI chatbot isn’t just another AI chatbot; it’s a personal assistant with a unique twist – it’s designed to be a kind, supportive, and emotionally intelligent companion.

Introducing Pi AI

On May 2, 2023, Inflection AI unveiled its first groundbreaking product: Pi, a personal AI assistant designed to redefine the way we interact with artificial intelligence.

As Mustafa Suleyman, the company’s CEO and co-founder, eloquently put it, “Pi is a new kind of AI, one that isn’t just smart but also has good EQ. We think of Pi as a digital companion on hand whenever you want to learn something new, when you need a sounding board to talk through a tricky moment in your day, or just pass the time with a curious and kind counterpart.”

The secret to Pi’s empathetic nature lies in an innovative process called “empathetic fine-tuning.” By training on vast datasets of deeply emotional conversations between real people, Pi has learned to understand and respond to complex personal issues with a level of empathy and understanding that had long eluded traditional AI systems.

Pi’s Capabilities and Multi-Modal Approach

At its core, Pi stands for “personal intelligence,” a nod to its ability to provide tailored knowledge based on a person’s unique interests and needs. This AI assistant is no ordinary chatbot; it’s a teacher, coach, confidante, creative partner, and sounding board all rolled into one.

Inflection AI’s approach to Pi is truly multi-modal, ensuring that users can engage with their personal assistant across various platforms and devices. At launch, Pi was available on Instagram, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, SMS, and a dedicated website, with mobile apps for iOS and Android soon to follow.

In November 2023, Inflection AI announced the completion of Inflection-2, the best model in the world for its compute class and the second most capable large language model (LLM) globally at the time.

Trained on a whopping 5,000 NVIDIA H100 GPUs, Inflection-2 outperformed Google’s flagship PaLM 2 Large model on a majority of standard AI performance benchmarks, including MMLU, TriviaQA, HellaSwag, and GSM8k.

The benchmarking results for Inflection-2 were nothing short of impressive, with the model outperforming industry giants like GPT-4, Claude-2, LLaMA-2, and Grok-1 across a wide range of tasks.

On the MMLU benchmark, which measures performance across tasks ranging from high school to professional level, Inflection-2 even outperformed Claude-2 with chain-of-thought reasoning.

Inflection-2.5 Benchmarks Challenges GPT-4

Inflection AI’s technological prowess caught the attention of industry giants and investors alike. In June 2023, the company announced a staggering $1.3 billion investment round led by Microsoft, Nvidia, Reid Hoffman, Bill Gates, and Eric Schmidt.

With this substantial investment, Inflection AI set out to build one of the largest AI training clusters in the world, comprising of 22,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs.

On March 7, 2024, Inflection AI unveiled Inflection-2.5, an upgraded model that they boldly claimed was competitive with the world’s leading LLMs like GPT-4 and Gemini.

“Now we are adding IQ to Pi’s exceptional EQ,” the company proclaimed, highlighting their commitment to combining raw capability with emotional intelligence.

According to Inflection AI’s own testing, Inflection-2.5 approached GPT-4’s performance while using only 40% of the compute for training. The model demonstrated particular strides in areas of IQ like coding and mathematics, translating into concrete improvements on key industry benchmarks.

On the MBPP+ and HumanEval+ coding benchmarks, Inflection-2.5 showed a massive improvement over its predecessor, Inflection-1, indicating the company’s progress in enhancing Pi’s coding abilities.

As Inflection AI continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible with Pi AI assistant, the company’s vision is clear: to make this transformative technology accessible to every person in the world, breaking down barriers and democratizing access.

“We have a lot to learn and a long way to go, but we are excited to bring this first version of Pi to people around the world,” said Suleyman, underscoring the company’s commitment to continuous improvement and accessibility.

As the world of AI continues to evolve, one thing is certain: Inflection AI’s remarkable journey from Pi to Inflection-2.5 is just the beginning of a revolution that promises to redefine our relationship with machines, one empathetic interaction at a time.
