It’s been just over a year since the ChatGPT launch and we have already seen 3 big ChatGPT updates from it – GPT 3, GPT-3.5 and GPT-4. And we are probably going to get GPT-5 very soon.

In a recent podcast of Bill Gates with Sam Altman, we got to know Sam’s views on AGI and a tiny glimpse into what could be the new features in GPT-5.

Let’s explore the possibilities of GPT-5 features.

Features of GPT-5

Sam Altman talked a lot about what people are expecting from ChatGPT. And its a huge possibility that they will bring these features in GPT-5. Here are some of the features we can expect in GPT-5 based on the conversation:

  1. Progress in Reasoning Ability: Sam Altman emphasizes that one of the most important areas of progress will be in the reasoning ability of GPT-5. This suggests a focus on enhancing the AI’s capability to understand and process complex logic, making it more proficient in critical thinking and problem-solving tasks.
  2. Customizable Responses: GPT-5 will allow users to customize the AI’s responses according to their preferences. This customization may include different styles of responses and assumptions, catering to individual users’ specific needs and preferences.
  3. Integration with Personal Data: GPT-5 will have the ability to integrate with personal data such as emails, calendars, and other relevant information. This integration will enable the AI to have a better understanding of the user’s context, preferences, and scheduling, providing more personalized and context-aware responses.
  4. Enhanced Reasoning Ability: The next generation of GPT will feature improved reasoning ability. This enhancement suggests that GPT-5 will be better equipped to understand complex scenarios, draw logical conclusions, and engage in more sophisticated forms of problem-solving.
  5. Multimodal Capabilities: GPT-5 will support multimodality, meaning it will be able to process and generate content in various formats, including speech in and speech out, as well as images. The future development may also include support for video, providing a more comprehensive and immersive user experience.
  6. Expanded Media Understanding: GPT-5 will be more adept at understanding various forms of media. This improvement may involve better comprehension of audio, images, and eventually video. The goal is to make the AI more versatile in handling and generating content in different modalities.
  7. Increased Reliability: GPT-5 is expected to be more reliable and accurate in generating responses. This improvement aims to reduce instances of misinformation or irrelevant outputs, enhancing the overall trustworthiness and usefulness of the AI system.
  8. Advanced Connectivity to External Data Sources: The AI will be more tightly connected to external data sources. This connectivity may involve accessing information from the internet or other relevant databases, allowing GPT-5 to provide more up-to-date and accurate information in its responses.

The next-generation artificial intelligence will have improved reasoning ability, be better at understanding more forms of media, and generally be more reliable more often – Sam Altman

Will GPT-5 feature AGI?

Gates and Altman talked about the possibility of Artificial General Intelligence or AGI in the upcoming developments. Sam believes that AGI should be the focus of every AI company right now. AGI is a hypothetical type of AI that possesses human-level or even exceeding general intelligence. GPT-5 might not be a total AGI based chatbot but it will surely possess some features that will be the stepping stones towards AGI technology.

GPT-5 Release Date

There is no official information available on when will GPT-5 release yet. But GPT-5 is anticipated to release within 2024. It didn’t take long for the company to launch GPT-4 in March 2023, after the launch of GPT-3.5 in November 2022.

Hence, it is safe to say that we will see the GPT-5 in 2024. Interestingly, there were many ChatGPT users who claimed that it says it was running on a new AI model called GPT-4.5 Turbo. However, that turned out to be an AI hallucination.

Sam Altman’s thoughts on AGI

In the podcast, Sam Altman emphasized his belief in AGI. Emphasizing on many researches and developments, he believes that AGI should be the focus of the companies but they should still develop it in a cautious way. He said enhancing reasoning and multimodal learning in models will be stepping stones to AGI. Altman addresses ethical concerns, stressing responsible governance to mitigate risks such as misuse and job displacement. His cautious yet optimistic tone underscores the complexity of AGI’s journey, highlighting the importance of measured progress and ethical considerations for the realization of human-level or surpassing intelligence.

We are going to make sure that we’re all aligned at where we’re going and this AGI mission. But beyond that, we’re going to let people do their thing. We’re going to realize it’s going to go through some twists and turns and take a while – Sam Altman

The Bill Gates and Sam Altman Podcast

On January 11th, 2024, Bill Gates released an episode of “Unconfuse me with Bill Gates” where he invited Sam Altman, the founder and CEO of OpenAI, to discuss the development in AI and how its at its lowest stage right now.

The most interesting part of the podcast was when Sam talks about his biggest fear related to AI. Sam Altman said-

“We’ve seen that with the great technological revolutions of the past. Each technological revolution has gotten faster, and this will be the fastest by far. That’s the part that I find potentially a little scary, is the speed with which society is going to have to adapt, and that the labour market will change.”

Altman believes that people are still resisting the AI revolution and that this might result in a lot more job losses than we are already seeing.

Conclusion

ChatGPT evolved with rapid updates like GPT-3, GPT-3.5, and GPT-4. And the most anticipated release of GPT-5 promises groundbreaking features. Sam Altman’s insights in a recent podcast with Bill Gates shed light on the future of AI, emphasizing AGI as a long-term goal. Although we don’t know when ChatGPT-5 release exactly, it definitely signals a significant step towards AGI. I am very excited to try out GPT-5 and find the ways it can help to automate different tasks.
