How We Test and Rank
Appscribed reviews and ranks software independently. Two things stay completely separate: our editorial rankings, which are based on evidence, and any paid placement, which is always clearly labelled. One never buys the other.
Our scoring method
Every tool is scored from 1 to 10 against a fixed, weighted set of criteria defined for its category, and those sub-scores combine into a single overall score. The criteria differ by category, because good means different things in each one. A business phone system is judged on call quality and reliability; a logo maker on the quality of the output. The exact criteria and weights for each category are published at the top of that category guide, so you can see precisely how the ranking was reached.
How we test
- We test free tiers and trials hands-on where they are available, and say when a score rests on published data rather than our own hands-on use.
- We verify live pricing from the vendor before publishing, and re-check it on updates.
- We base every score on verified third-party ratings aggregated from sources like G2, Capterra, Trustpilot and Product Hunt.
- For the top contenders in each category, we dig deeper into paid-plan features and pricing.
- Where a vendor supplies facts such as pricing or features, we verify them independently. Vendor input can correct a fact, but it never sets a score.
Independence and sponsorship
We also use affiliate links, which are marked. If you buy through one we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you, and it has no bearing on where a tool ranks.
Keeping reviews current
Every review and ranking is dated and re-checked at least once a year, and immediately whenever a tool changes its pricing or product. When a score changes, it is because the evidence changed.
