Google’s VideoPoet Might Change the Video Content Forever

Updated on December 24 2023

Google recently made a very interesting announcement. On 19th December 2023, Google unveiled VideoPoet, a groundbreaking text-to-video which has a lot more to offer.

Although, there are many more text-to-video we have seen in 2023, Google’s VideoPoet is more than that. It can create videos without any other input except a prompt.

Let’s see what VideoPoet has to offer and how to use Google VideoPoet.

What is VideoPoet?

Google’s VideoPoet is an AI tool that can turn your words into vibrant video clips. It doesn’t just paint your words, it also adds music, lets you edit scenes, and even choose artistic styles like watercolor or sci-fi. Google VideoPoet is still under development, but its potential to spark creativity and tell stories in new ways is already blowing minds.

Features of VideoPoet

Language Model-like Approach and Creative Freedom: VideoPoet employs discrete tokens for video and audio, diverging from diffusion-based models that generate individual frames. This approach ensures the production of consistent, coherent long-form videos with smoother motion. Additionally, VideoPoet introduces zero-shot generation, enabling the creation of videos solely from text prompts, offering users unparalleled creative freedom.

Versatility in Creative Workflows: A standout feature of VideoPoet is its acceptance of multimodal inputs and outputs. This tool seamlessly integrates text, images, and videos as prompts, facilitating diverse creative workflows. Moreover, VideoPoet extends beyond video generation with its advanced video editing capabilities, allowing users finer control over their creations.

Artistic Styles and Cinematic Control: Google VideoPoet focuses on delivering unique visual identities by offering a selection of artistic styles such as painting, animation, and photorealistic rendering. Users can also simulate various camera movements, including panning, zooming, and tracking, enhancing the cinematic quality of their videos.

Mobile-Friendly Formats for Social Media Platforms: Recognizing the prominence of short-form content, VideoPoet is optimized for vertical videos. It generates videos in square or portrait formats, making it ideal for platforms like TikTok videos and Instagram Reels.

How to use VideoPoet?

Google has only introduced VideoPoet yet and not any release date. You cannot use VideoPoet as of 25 December 2023.

However, you can be a part of Google’s AI Test Kitchen where they generally beta test their new AI tools and try VideoPoet when (or if) they launch their beta version on AI test kitchen.

How VideoPoet Works?

Google's VideoPoet - How VideoPoet works
How VideoPoet works

Google has explained its working in their Research paper on VideoPoet. However, as its quite long and complicated, we tried to simplify and tell you how VideoPoet works here –

Multimodal Inputs: Text prompts, images, video clips, or audio are transformed into discrete sequences of codes using specialized transformers like MAGVIT V2 for video and SoundStream for audio. This makes them compatible with the language model behind the scenes.

Large Language Model (LLM): Imagine a supercharged language model trained on massive amounts of text and video data. VideoPoet leverages this LLM’s understanding of language and visual relationships to interpret your input codes and generate new ones.

Specialized decoders: These take the LLM’s output codes and translate them back into visual and audio data. This recreates the video scene, frame by frame, and generates a matching soundtrack based on the overall content and style.

Style Transfer: VideoPoet can apply various artistic styles like watercolor, animation, or even photorealism by modifying the generated video data. This adds the desired visual flavor to your creation.

Adds Audio: VideoPoet provides you with an option to add audio to your video. This can include a background sound, dialogues or even narration.

Editing: VideoPoet will provide you with many options to edit the video. This includes adjusting lighting, camera angles, color saturation, and many more.

Optional Feedback Loop: VideoPoet might allow you to review and suggest changes to specific aspects like lighting, character details, or music. This iterative process helps fine-tune the video and bring your vision to life.

VideoPoet Release Date

Google has not provided any information in their announcement page about VideoPoet release date. But we can expect it to be released within the next 6 months.

How is VideoPoet different from other Text to Video?

There are text-to-videos tools already available in the market like Synthesia, InVideo, Pictory and many more. However, most AI video generators create videos using the given frames whereas VideoPoet provides “Zero-Shot” feature that allows you to create a video just out of your prompt. Moreover, another big advancement in VideoPoet is its ability to create videos from existing images and videos online and let you edit it including the camera angles. This makes Google’s VideoPoet the most advanced AI video generator tool yet.

Unlike other tools in 2023, VideoPoet goes beyond conventional capabilities. It introduces the groundbreaking ability to generate videos solely from text prompts, setting it apart in terms of creative freedom.

The features of VideoPoet encompass a language model-like approach, versatility in creative workflows, artistic styles, and cinematic control, all optimized for mobile-friendly formats. While its release date remains undisclosed, the potential revealed through its features hints at a tool that can transform words into vibrant, dynamic video clips, complete with music, scene editing, and various artistic styles.
