Samsung has been innovating the mobile experience since 1988, when it launched its first mobile phone ever.

I am sure, like all of us, you must have come across their advertisement about the Samsung event where they tell about all the highlights of their mobile phones. If not, check this out first:

And if you have been a Samsung user from a long time, it would be nostalgic for you as well.

However, this ad was not about their past innovations. It was about the Galaxy AI – “the new era of  mobile”

Galaxy AI was introduced by Samsung in their recent event. It promises to revolutionize the mobile experience through a blend of on-device and cloud-based AI features.

Primarily focusing on communication, productivity, and creativity, Galaxy AI is a comprehensive suite embedded in the Samsung Galaxy S24 series.

Galaxy AI’s notable features include AI Live Translate Call for real-time multilingual conversation translations, Live Caption for video subtitles, Notes Assist for summarizing notes, and Generative Text for creative writing suggestions.

However, it is not yet available on all Samsung’s smartphones.

Which devices will get Galaxy AI?

Currently, Galaxy AI is confirmed to debut on the newly released Samsung Galaxy S24 series, including the S24, S24+, and S24 Ultra. These devices come pre-equipped with the necessary hardware and software to fully utilize Galaxy AI features.

While Samsung’s current focus is on these flagship devices, there are speculations about extending Galaxy AI to older Galaxy devices.

Other S series flagships like the S22 and foldable phones in the Galaxy Z series, such as the Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5, may receive Galaxy AI features based on hardware capabilities.

It is unclear if Samsung will bring Galaxy AI to its mid-range and budget Galaxy smartphones. Bringing Galaxy AI to these devices would depend heavily on their hardware capabilities and whether they can handle the processing demands.

Samsung Galaxy AI Vs Bixby

Galaxy AI is totally different from what Bixby was. Bixby worked as an AI assistant for Samsung devices, whereas, Galaxy AI will be integrated in each app and features of Samsung phones.

Is Samsung Using Google’s AI?

Samsung is bringing new AI features to its Galaxy S24 using Google’s Gemini AI model enhancing native apps like Notes, Voice Recorder, Keyboard, and Gallery.

Moreover, messaging and communication see improvements through Android Auto and Circle to Search. An upcoming Zoom feature promises enhanced video conferencing with noise cancellation, real-time background replacement, and automatic framing.

This collaboration positions the Galaxy S24 series as a productivity, creativity, and communication powerhouse, showcasing the impactful synergy between Google’s technology and Samsung’s innovation.

However, it is unclear if Galaxy AI is powered by Gemini LLM or if they are using their own LLM – Samsung Gauss Language, which they announced in November 2023.

Other AI Phones

While the Samsung Galaxy S24 series with its integrated Gemini AI features marks a significant step forward, it’s not the only phone making waves in the AI arena.

Companies like Asus, Vivo, Xiomi, OnePlus are all bringing innovative AI features like live translation, noise cancellation, game boost, etc. In fact, most of them are adding AI chip to their smartphones to be able to support future AI features.

We saw a surge in AI smartphones in the recent CES 2024 event where there were many companies focusing on making AI more accessible in smarter way.

One company that stood out was Rabbit that launched its Rabbit R1 phone in the event. This phone was focusing “Large Action Model” or LAM that lets its AI access your apps directly using the integrations.

It can be used with voice commands and its simple interface on a small screen. Contrary to what Samsung is trying to do with Galaxy S24, Rabbit is focused on making people use phones more with AI and voice than using their screens.

What will be the future of AI Phones?

The recent launch of Samsung’s Galaxy AI in Galaxy S24 smartphone hints at a very transformative possibilities.

When I think what the future will look like about 2 years from now, I see AI assistants evolve into proactive partners, predicting commute times, suggesting alternate routes, checking news to see if alternate route is blocked due to something, automatically updating others about it and seamlessly integrating with various apps to help you do a single task.

Privacy and security take center stage, with on-device AI processing and enhanced user control over data. Personalization will reach a new height, tailoring phone experiences and venturing into health monitoring.

AI will extend its influence beyond smartphones, embedding itself in wearables and smart home devices. However, ethical considerations, addressing the digital divide, and striking the right balance between personalization and privacy will be important for a responsible and inclusive future in AI-driven mobile technology.

Conclusion

Whether Samsung’s Galaxy AI will be good enough to impress users or not, it will definitely mark “the new era of  mobile”. Samsung’s journey in mobile innovation has now reached a new milestone with the introduction of Galaxy AI in the Galaxy S24 series. The featured AI capabilities, including real-time translation, transcription, and enhanced photo and video editing, showcase the potential for a revolutionary smartphone interaction experience. As the tech landscape evolves, the future of AI phones holds promises of seamless integration, heightened privacy, and personalized experiences extending beyond smartphones, but ethical considerations and inclusivity must remain at the forefront to ensure responsible and progressive AI-driven mobile technology.
